SPRINT ENTERS LOCAL WIRELESS MARKET...
Sprint Store on N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau All of the cellular tower construction around the Southeast Missouri region tells you that the wireless telephone market is getting larger. Recently Sprint, has established a "Sprint Store" on North Kingshighway, in the former A & W Restaurant building. The company originally known for transforming the discount long distance market and going head to head with AT&T and other major providers has become a communication giant expanding into cellular, internet and local phone service. Sprint joins a variety of other competitors in the market including the two original wireless providers, Southwestern Bell and Ameritech (now merged into Verizon). Bell still maintains a corporate sales store in town in addition to a variety of authorized agents in the region. Verizon handles most of it's business through re-sellers, some of whom are exclusively in the cellular phone and paging business. Cell phones and pagers can also be obtained through the mass merchandisers such as Sam's Club, Circuit City, Staples and Radio Shack. The increase of the public's demand for wireless modes of communications has increased the need for additional towers, many of them along the interstate highways. Business travelers are taking advantage of wireless plans that allow them to call anywhere in the country with no additional long distance surcharges. Sprint, the newest service in town has extensively promoted it's plan of a one rate long distance digital communication. As the cellular market becomes more competitive, providers will be rolling out more discount programs and better quality and coverage in order to attract new customers. |
