PART I


In the early days of Southeast Missouri and the Cape Girardeau area, things revolved around the river because it was the primary shipping and receiving route for any community at the time.  Cape's strategic location along the Mississippi River immediately made it an early settlement in the Midwest region

With railroads pushing Westward, Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri were not overlooked.  Primarily an north - south route, Cape's location was ideal for shipping points between Chicago and the east, St. Louis to the North and all points West including Memphis and the Southwest United States.

With a main railroad line and river shipping by boat and barge, Cape Girardeau was set to grow.  It became a true regional trade area for Southeast Missouri.  To increase it's trade from the east, a group of investors decided a bridge over the mighty Mississippi was in order.  And build a bridge they did!  Traffic from all points east were more accessible to Southeast Missouri goods and services.

With such prosperous times, growing Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri needed various services for the area and the influx of travelers including hospitals, schools and hotels
