As previously mentioned in Part I, the growing area of Southeast Missouri and the Cape Girardeau required more community services which included governmental, schools and places to stay.

American's began to take to the roads in their automobiles and with Cape's location, it too prospered with the construction of paved highways. Roadside gas stations and places to eat began to spring up on the West side of town.
