CHARLESTON PRISON

OPENS IT'S DOORS

Southeast Correctional Center - Charleston, MO

A $70 million dollar maximum-security correctional center located just off Interstate 57 in Charleston, Missouri is open for business as one of Missouri's newest prisons.

The Mississippi County region is looking forward to Southeast Missouri Correctional Center's $9.1 million annual payroll and eventually 425 jobs. Charleston had been avidly seeking jobs since 1996 when several industries in the area pulled out, taking nearly 650 jobs with them.

Community leaders aggressively sought the prison project along with several other Missouri towns. Former representative and state "first lady" Betty Hearnes, wife of  former Governor Warren Hearnes (and a Charleston resident) led the delegation to lobby for the state facility.

Construction of the correctional center, located on 40 acres is designed to hold about 1,600 inmates is well under construction with plans to begin accepting it's first inhabitants in November of this year.
