PORT AUTHORITY CHIP MILL

ANNOUNCES CLOSING...

Canal Wood Industries - SEMO Port

30 workers were permanently laid off with the announcement of the closing of Canal Wood Products operating at the Southeast Missouri Port Authority between Cape Girardeau and Scott City. Workers affected by the announcement included 15 who worked at the processing plant and another 15 timber buyers.

Management of Canal, who operated here as Missouri Fibre Corporation cited market conditions as the reason for the shut down.  The $13 million dollar plant was built in recent years and exported the majority of it's chips to overseas markets.  A drastic weakness in this market contributed to the closing of the local plant according to a company spokesman.

Missouri Fibre's plant manager made the official announcement to the media and it's employees on January 31st with an anticipated ceasing of all operations by February 16th.
