CAPE AREA CONVENIENCE STORES TO OPEN SOON...
Cape Girardeau is without a shortage of convenience stores and several plan to open very soon. Almost across the street from one another are two new units going up on Kingshighway near Independence. Kidd Oil recently took down an older store and is presently replacing it with a brand new one along with a car wash at 133 N. Kingshighway. Albertson's, the grocery giant is also nearing completion on their new 1,700 square foot convenience store at the corner of Independence and Kingshighway. The new store is being built along with their almost 60,000 square foot full service food store on the same site. An early spring opening is planned. D-Mart, a Drury Company has recently opened at Fruitland at the I-55 and Highway 61 interchange exit. The newest store is Shell branded and sets across the street from the original convenience store opened by Drury several years ago. Casey's is nearing completion on their store, also in the Fruitland area, located on Highway 61 near Route W. The Midwest chain has built and opened several stores in the region in the last few years. Drury's also have plans to open two new stores in the west Cape area, one near the intersection of Mount Auburn and Independence and the other at 523 Seimers near the corner of Bloomfield Road. Plans have been submitted for both, but construction has not yet began. Basic Fuels has purchased it's first Cape Girardeau site near the intersection of Bloomfield Road and S. Broadview. The no-frills gas only operation has broken ground on the site and plans to open in early spring. The company operates in Jackson and has created a stir among gas retailers in the area with their lowering of prices and cash only policy. Reports are that both Bistate Oil and Rhodes 101 Convenience Stores each have purchased corners on South Sprigg Street and Highway 74 (Shawnee Parkway) Both local chains plan new convenience stores on the locations to coincide with the opening of the new Emerson Bridge connecting Missouri and Illinois. The new bridge, well under way is to be completed within 2 years or so. |
