PLANT TO BE BUILT IN CAPE
Ethanol Plant to be Constructed on Nash Road in Cape Girardeau
In addition to the ethanol plant, plans are also on the drawing board to possibly build a companion 20-megawatt power plant that would generate electricity from recyling the city's garbage.
Renewable Power of Marshall, Mo., which plans to build and run both the ethanol and power plant would produce fuel alcohol from corn.
Construction of the plant that could create as many as 1,500 construction jobs that could begin as soon as the spring of 2004 on a 32-acre industrial tract presently owned by the Cape Girardeau Industrial organization just off of Nash Road.
Plans are for the new plant to produce 40 million gallons of ethanol annually and use an estimated 15 million bushels of corn a year and to employ as many as 40 workers. The adjacent bio mass energy power plant would employ an additional 120 people.
Renewable Power has announced they have already secured all the environmental permits needed for the ethanol plant, but has yet to secure the permits and complete all of the planning for the power plant.
The company broke ground on Sept. 30 for an ethanol plant in Marshall that is expected to be completed by January 2005. Ethanol is the simplest form of alcohol, it blends easily with gasoline (to produce gasohol), and contains no heavy hydrocarbons.
The new Cape Girardeau plant would join 75 other operating ethanol plants, including two in Missouri. Fourteen, including Renewable Power's plant at Marshall, currently are under construction nationwide.
