SAVE A LOT CHAIN TO INCREASE OUTLETS...
Cape Girardeau Save-A-Lot Store The Save-A-Lot Ltd. grocery chain, a subsidiary of SuperValu Inc., a supermarket retailer and food distributor in Eden Prairie, Minn. plans to expand into new markets around the nation and grow from 900 stores to 2,000 in the next five years. The company founded in 1977, and headquartered in the St. Louis area plans to grow in New England and the Southwest and also wants to add stores in Chicago and Los Angeles. The chain has 15 stores in the St. Louis metro area and several scattered throughout Southeast Missouri including Cape Girardeau, Jackson, and several other communities. No specifics were released regarding additional units to be added in the region. A spokesman for Save-A-Lot said about 20 percent of the expansion will come from building new stores with the rest will come through purchasing existing buildings or leases and buying other stores. The company's success comes through it's appeal to thrifty shoppers and puts it in a strong position to expand even in a slowing economy. The typical Save-A-Lot carries about 1,250 grocery and non-food items in about 15,000 square feet. Another cost saving feature is that most items are packaged under private labels for the store by national brand manufacturers. Save-A-Lot operates 11 distribution centers, including one in St. Louis. A 12th center is under construction in Muncie, Ind. |
