NEW SEARS GRAND STORE OPENS IN CAPE GIRARDEAU
Sears Grand Store in Cape Girardeau Rumors have abounded in recent years about Sears relocating in Cape Girardeau. Speculated locations range from the retailer becoming the mall's newest anchor to a brand new free-standing store along Siemer's retail row. The mystery was solved when Sears and Cape Girardeau city officials jointly announced the national retailer would build a new store on Siemer's Drive, just south of Goody's, Staples and Target.
The new 150,000 square foot store called Sears Grand opened recently and features familiar merchandise along with health and beauty products, snacks pantry items and other family-oriented products. It will be the sixth store nationally to be built featuring this concept and design. Those supposedly in the know say that Sears had been looking to enlarge it's presence in Cape Girardeau and replace it's aging store in the Town Plaza Shopping Center, a retail development opened in the early 1960's. The new store is triple the size of the present Cape store. The new Sears Grand retained all of it's present 87 employees and will hire as many as 90 more full time and 88 part-time workers. Store officials expect the new retail location will generate over $21 million in revenue during it's first year. City and County sales-tax revenues from store sales will be used to fund some of the infrastructure site improvements were announced by city officials. Sears hopes to be in operation in their new location by December, 2005.
