TOWERS GOING UP EVERYWHERE...
Take a drive up and down Interstate 55 and you cannot help but notice the new communication towers that have been erected in recent months. Obviously a sign of the great demand for wireless communications and paging. Part of the increase has been fueled by the entrance of some new providers in the area, including Sprint who installed a new tower right on the same location as their retail outlet on North Kingshighway. Consumer's trends toward the use of smaller and more compact phones have necessitated better coverage for these models who have lesser power than the earlier models. Many users have taken advantage of flat rate plans requiring no roaming or long distance charges nationwide. Travelers with these wireless devices are insisting on better signals, even in rural areas outside the metropolitan cities. Some of the new towers are also represented by the cable industry as they move toward better quality signals transfers and eventually high speed internet and local phone service for their subscribers in the region. Charter Communications announced a multi-million dollar upgrades nation wide, with Southeast Missouri benefiting from some of those expenditures. |
